R O vs. Depth Filters

Which system is right for you?

Depth Filters - an overview

Depth filters generally provide a single line of defense for contaminant removal.  As water passes through the filter, contaminant larger than the filter pore size will be removed.  Depth filters come in a variety of efficiencies and micron ratings.  Normally, the lower the micron rating and the higher the efficiency, the more expensive the filter. They key to cost effective filtration is to know what contaminant you are trying to remove and only filter to the level you need.  Depth filters are a good choice when you are removing sediment or trying to improve the taste and odor of water.  Activated carbon cartridges do a good job of removing organic chemicals and chlorine when flow rates are kept to below 1/2 gallon per minute for a 10” cartridge.

Reverse Osmosis - an overview

Reverse osmosis of water is the process of pushing water through a semipermeable membrane while keeping contaminant on the opposite side.  The membranes used in reverse osmosis have no pores. They are constructed of a microscopic polymer layer which is primarily designed to allow only water to pass through.  The water goes into solution while in contact with the membrane and then passes through by diffusion.  Osmosis is the tendency of water to diffuse through the membrane so both sides of the membrane are assimilated together.  By exerting high pressure (35+ psi) on the contaminant side of the membrane, the purified water is forced to stay on the purified side. Thus the term reverse osmosis.  The purified water that has passed through the membrane is then sent to a storage tank.  The contaminant laden water that was not allowed to pass through the membrane is sent to the drain. The microscopic nature of reverse osmosis membranes allow them to remove a greater range of contaminants than depth filters.

Systems combining depth filtration with reverse osmosis membranes provide a cost effective way to get purified water and peace of mind!
